When Sarah Remington traveled from the United States to Kunming, China to meet her 9-month-old daughter Mia, she brought with her a well-slept-in chenille baby blanket. The blanket provided comfort to Sarah during the anxious days she and her husband Chris waited to meet Mia.
But in China the blanket quickly became Mia’s: “When I gave the blanket to Mia, she pretty much slept with it all the time from day one. I think it helped with her feeling of attachment and security. She was a really easy baby. We were so lucky.”
Three years later in 2010, Sarah read a story about TOMS Shoes, which gives away a pair of shoes for every pair they sell. That story and the comfy blanket she brought to China inspired Sarah and her friend Veronica Zanellato Kido to start a business of their own selling high-quality, amazingly soft blankets to consumers and giving away a blanket to an orphaned child for every blanket sold.
It took a year and a half to find the right manufacturers, but Sarah and Veronica’s company Me Two You is now in full swing. Me Two You has already given blankets to orphans in Brazil and plans to develop a worldwide network of orphanages where they can donate their blankets.
In 2012, Me Two You launched a partnership with Half the Sky through which it donates 10 USD to HTS for every blanket bought through our store and a campaign to send donated blankets to China, the 500 Blankets to China Challenge: “I always felt that Mia was very well taken care of during the first nine months of her life. I wanted to give back to the people who helped,” says Sarah.
As for Mia, her mom says she’s perfect: “She’s the type of kid who always has a smile on her face. She has an incredibly kind heart. She’s very smart. She fills my heart with happiness.” And even though she’s a big girl about to turn six, Mia still loves her (pink) blanket: “She is a blankie girl. She trails her blanket around everywhere.”
