School is out in China and Half the Sky’s caregivers are determined that our children have opportunities for fun and educational summer outings, just as children living in families do. Our Youth Services mentor at the Nanchang Children’s Welfare Institution, working with volunteers from the Nanchang Charitable Organization, took 12 children to the city’s new zoo. For six of the children, it was their first trip to a zoo, and for some their first time riding in a car.
The children saw crocodiles, peacocks, lions, dolphins, and more. One child got a special kiss from one of the stars of the Dolphin and Sea Lion show (see photo), which was proclaimed the group’s favorite part of the day!
After the trip, our mentor extended the learning experience by having the children talk about the day, prepare a written record, and help plan the next, great summer outing!
