Sharing their good fortune

For one San Francisco Bay Area family, fundraising for Half the Sky started with Richard Bowen’s book, Mei Mei, Little Sister: Portraits from a Chinese Orphanage. When Ava Chan showed the book to her 14-year-old son, Peter and her 13-year-old daughter, Vivian two years ago, they poured over the haunting portraits of girls living in Chinese orphanages. “We were so touched by the moving photos,” says Peter....

Sponsorships

SPONSOR A CHILD
For $300 per year, or $25 per month, you can support one child in a HTS Baby Sisters Infant Nurture Center or Little Sisters Preschool for an entire year. You will receive a beautiful certificate and periodic photos and progress reports on that child you sponsor through the year. You can request that the child be from any institution where Half the Sky operates a Children's Center. As costs begin to rise in China, we hope to assign two sponsors to each child in order to reflect the actual annual per-child costs of providing nurturing care. If you wish to be the sole sponsor of your child, the annual cost is $600 or $50 per month.

SPONSOR BIG SISTERS
You can give older children growing up in Chinese institutions a chance for a better life.  Your gift of $900 per year or $75 per month goes into the Big Sisters General Fund that provides individualized enrichment programs depending on a child's interests and abilities—music and art lessons, computer classes, languages, sports or vocational training.

Or you may designate that your donation go to the Big Sisters University Fund, which provides university tuition for dedicated students who, despite long odds, are pursuing their dream of graduating from college.

Because our Big Sisters have differing goals and interests, costs of supportiing their studies vary.  That's why we pool the funds.  You will not be assigned an individual child, but all Big Sisters sponsors receive a periodic newsletter that features letters and artwork produced by the children themselves.

SPONSOR A FAMILY
Half the Sky’s Family Villages give children with special needs who will not be adopted the chance to learn what it means to become part of a family. For $3000 per year or $250 a month, you can become a Family Sponsor. You donation covers the costs of a stipend for one parent, enabling her to stay at home to provide full-time care to the special needs of her children, home maintenance, and an activities fund that we create for each child. As a family sponsor, you will receive periodic updates about your family.

SPONSOR BLUE SKY TRAINING

Help bring the essential and life-changing message about the importance of nurturing care to caregivers at every orphanage in China by giving the gift of a $420 (payable $35 a month for a year if you choose) Blue Sky Training Sponsorship. You will receive a beautiful certificate in honor of your gift and the knowledge that you are helping to bring nurturing care to so many more children.

The training each caretaker receives helps transform the lives of the children in her care. One Half the Sky Nanny wrote this during her training in Shenzhen in 2007: "I had no idea what happens in the early years is so important. No one ever taught me this. I only learned to bathe and feed my baby." Please help us spread the message to orphanage caretakers that to thrive, children need more than food, clothing and shelter--they need to be cherished.
